The English Language Institute at Eastern Washington University was one of the first three schools in the U.S. to be accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). In addition to membership in the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), we are the only UCIEP (University and College Intensive English Programs) school in the state of Washington.
The English Language Institute collaborates with other departments on campus in order to support international students both linguistically and culturally. Here are just a few examples:
MBA (Master of Business Administration) Preparation for International Students: The English Skills Support (ESS) Program, run by the English Language Institute and College of Business and Public Administration, is designed for students who wish to improve their English language skills to gain admission to the MBA program at Eastern Washington University. It is a one-calendar year, intensive program focused on developing discussion skills and written communication skills equivalent to a 580 TOEFL score.
During the year, students complete the business foundation course work required to enter the MBA degree. After completing ESS, a student can then apply for admission to the MBA degree. Students in the ESS Program will complete the foundation courses in their first year, and if admitted to the MBA degree, will be able to complete their coursework in their second year. Altogether, this is a two calendar year program, that includes the foundation year and the MBA year.
Graduate Preparation Program: The purpose of the Graduate Preparation Program is to provide a bridge to academic and cultural life in the United States for students wishing to enter graduate programs at Eastern Washington University. With a combination of content courses and English language support courses, the students should be well prepared to be fully accepted into graduate studies. This Program is intended for a two quarter period.
Conditional Admission: English Language Institute students who are academically admissible to Eastern Washington University may enroll directly in undergraduate classes when they have successfully passed the English Language Institute requirements.
Many students enroll at Eastern Washington University as undergraduates after completing the Institute; a TOEFL score is not required for these students. Other students transfer to other universities in the United States or return to their home countries after improving their abilities in English. The English Language Institute Academic Advisor assists students in the process of enrolling at Eastern Washington University or other universities.
