Outstanding Academic Programs
Since opening in the early 1960's, Foothill and De Anza Colleges have emerged as two of the outstanding community colleges in the United States. Academic programs parallel requirements for the first two years of university study. Our students have an excellent success record! Of all the international students who complete their first two years at Foothill, most successfully transfer into their third year (as juniors) at one of the world-class public or private universities, including Stanford, University of California - Berkeley, University of California - San Diego, UCLA, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, and more! Here are just some of the transfer majors at Foothill and De Anza Colleges:
Architecture and Facilities: Several times, the American Institute of Architects has honored Foothill College with awards and has called the most beautiful community college ever built. Special facilities include large computer centers, online libraries, an Olympic-size swimming pool, par golf course, football stadiums, and several theaters including the Flint Center at De Anza College.
Orientation Program for International Students: All international students participate in a week-long orientation course at Foothill or De Anza before the start of the students' first quarter. During this course, each student gets to know the international staff who conduct a comprehensive orientation covering issues from personal adjustment to registration for classes. It's a great way to meet new friends!
English as a Second Language (ESL): Foothill and De Anza Colleges accept students with TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores of 500 (paper) and 173 (computer) or higher. An IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 5 or higher is also accepted. Both institutions place students into an English as a Second Language course depending on the individual's ability and needs.
Small Classes and Personal Attention: ESL classes are usually fewer than 20 students, and offer considerable individual attention. Regular academic classes are also small. Instruction is offered by full time professors who are hired for their proven teaching ability. In addition, one-to-one tutoring in English and in all academic areas is available through the Tutorial Centers. Special counseling is provided for international students to help with cultural adjustment, career choices, and transfer into the third year at four-year colleges and universities.
Housing Services: Foothill and De Anza have no housing facilities on campus. The college works with a local agency offering homestays. There are many apartments (including some that are furnished) available for rent in the area.
