The Intensive English as a Second Language Program: Glendale offers an easy and convenient way for non-native speakers of English to begin their academic journey in the United States:

  • Admission into Glendale's Intensive English as a Second Language (IESL) Program also admits a student into the college itself, so you may continue your studies without interruption.
  • While enrolled in ESL courses, students may earn credits transferrable into Glendale's academic programs.
  • No TOEFL score is required for admission.
  • All students must take a placement test to determine proficiency in English.

The Intensive English as a Second Language (IESL) Program is designed for international students or local students who need to improve their English language proficiency before undertaking an academic program of study. Students in the IESL will take a combination of English as a second language (ESL) classes appropriate to their level in such areas as grammar, reading, vocabulary development, conversation, listening, pronunciation practice, and composition skills. In addition, students will be scheduled for sessions in the learning assistance center, the computer lab, and the language lab. Altogether, IESL students will be busy studying English for 20-25 hours per week.

IESL admission requirements are similar to academic programs, and are open to any student who has finished high school, who has at least an intermediate command of English, and who wants to prepare for a college-level academic program. Students applying from outside the United States will have to qualify for an F-1 student visa in order to be allowed to enter the USA to study.

Glendale Community College's International Students Center (ISC) has two main goals: to bring more students from around the world to our campus, and to provide full services to them once they are here. More than 140 international students are currently enrolled, with over 50 countries represented. The ISP is committed to helping students from other countries in all stages of their educational experience; ISP provides a supportive place for nonimmigrant international students to meet each other, get information about housing in the area, to find out how to get a social security card or driver's license, or about things to see and do in Phoenix and the surrounding Valley.
