Academics at Musicians Institute (Select your preferences.)
Musicians Institute offers four types of programs: Bachelor of Music Degree, Associate of Arts Degree, Certificate Programs, and Non-Certificate Programs (Encore). The admissions process varies somewhat between different programs, so be sure to express your preferences early in the process.
Accreditation: Musicians Institute is accredited as a member institution by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). NASM also specifically accredits MI's Bachelor of Music Degree in Commercial Music and its Certificate programs for guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard players, vocalists, recording engineers, recording artists, and guitar builders. MI is also fully accredited by the Bureau of Private Postsecondary Vocational Education (BPPVE) of the State of California.
Bachelors Degrees: With a world-class teaching staff of professional, working musicians, MI provides an environment where knowledge and experience meet to help you discover your unique style of music. Musicians Institute offers you unmatched performing opportunities; the success of MI's methods are proven by the thousands of successful graduates employed in the music industry around the world.
Musicians Institute's challenging and selective Bachelor of Music Degree in Commercial Music Program was created to serve talented, dedicated musicians wanting to develop their practical music and critical thinking skills with other students of like mind. This program provides an opportunity to spend an extended period of time at MI, thus allowing for the exploration and maturation of style and performance in greater depth. The program's practical philosophy also maintains a connection with important industry trends and academic opportunities that are available in the ever changing, challenging and rewarding contemporary music world.
The program features performance-based conservatory style training in commercial music for Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards, and Vocals.
Associate of Arts Degrees (6 quarters / 90 credit units): Musicians Institute's AA Degree is a unique, all music degree program. The AA program builds an organized foundation of instrument skill, musical knowledge and live performance, and then adds advanced technique, musicianship, and recording experience. It's the best of both worlds: MI's famous intensive hands-on contemporary music training and a nationally recognized degree.
Certificate Programs at Musicians Institute are designed to increase your technical skills, musicianship and performing experience to a level that will allow you to play any style of music. Created by players for players, the one-year (four quarter) certificate programs teach the complete spectrum of contemporary music styles within MI's unique, hands-on, performance-intensive environment. The curriculum includes a combination of core classes, live playing workshops, private lessons, open counseling and electives as well as seminars and clinics by world-famous musicians.
The admissions procedure is selective and based on factors including an audition tape or written test (where applicable), the written application and prior experience. The most important criteria for admission are the applicant's desire for career advancement and commitment to an intensive educational program. Each applicant is individually reviewed, taking into consideration his or her experience, achievements, aptitude, attitude, and potential for growth. Prospective students are encouraged to follow a college preparatory curriculum and to take as many music and music-related courses as are practical prior to attending Musicians Institute.
Certificate Program Options:
Encore (Non-Certificate) Program is designed to allow students with limited time to create a personalized ten-week curriculum by choosing from the wide range of classes, performance workshops and open counseling sessions offered within Musicians Institute's unique facilities. All instruments, styles and levels are available, and classes start every quarter.
Every Encore Program includes private lessons, personal schedule, and 24-hour access to Musicians Institute's facilities for practice and rehearsal, use of the video library, admission to special clinics and seminars, and participation in open counseling and live performance workshops.
Please note: As non-certificate programs, Encore sessions are not eligible for U.S. financial aid. All classes are not offered each quarter. Please contact the admissions counselors at Musicians Institute by selecting your academic preferences and completing the simple form. Financial Aid Opportunities: Musicians Institute is an eligible institution under various federal and state financial aid programs to provide aid for U.S. Citizens and permanent residents. Each type of aid has specific eligibility requirements. If you qualify, you may be eligible for one or more types of aid. However, it is important for you to know that financial aid does not usually cover all of your tuition costs.
International Students: Students who are planning to attend Musicians Institute with an M-1 or F-1 Student Visa are ineligible to receive U.S. financial assistance. We recommend that you contact the Department of Student Financial Assistance in your country for information on financial aid available to you from your own government.
Location: Hollywood, California is a district of the City of Los Angeles. The population of the district is estimated at about 300,000 people. Due to its fame and identity as a major center of movie studios and stars, the word Hollywood is often used colloquially to refer to the American motion picture industry in Southern California, a term deriving from the famous community.
When the Guitar Institute of Technology opened its doors in Hollywood in 1977, it was the right place and time for a great new idea in music education: a focused, intense, hands-on contemporary program designed and taught by working professional musicians, and located in the center of the music industry.
We look forward to welcoming you to Musicians Institute! To learn more, review all of our programs and select the ones that interest you. Then complete the inquiry form, and we'll respond to you directly.
