Courses Offered at English Programs for Internationals
Intensive English: This program combines high-quality instruction with friendly, personalized service to provide an opportunity for international students to improve their English language skills before entering a college or university in the United States. It is also appropriate for individuals who need English skills for professional reasons. EPI is designed to help international students feel comfortable and succeed in their new environment. EPI offers five terms per year beginning in January, March, May, August, and October. Each term is nine weeks long, and each week students receive 20 hours of supervised English instruction.
English for Graduate Students: Acceptance into a graduate program shows that your TOEFL and GMAT or GRE scores meet the minimum requirements for English proficiency. However, many international students discover that their written and / or spoken English skills are weak. EPI gives you the opportunity to improve these skills before the semester begins. Many graduate students enroll for the last four weeks of EPI's Summer term. They are placed in EPI's top level, and are integrated into the classes. Teachers focus on improving academic speaking and writing skills, introducing the research resources available at a university, offering academic computer skills, and providing a general orientation to living and studying in the U.S.
English for Foreign Students: This program features comprehensive testing, academic advising, and instruction which assists the university's foreign students who have language-related difficulties. All newly admitted graduate students who are non-native speakers of English are required to take an English language proficiency examination administered by EPI before registration. This examination, consisting of a writing test and an oral interview, is designed to identify those students who need additional work on written and / or spoken English. A student visa cannot be issued for only ENFS courses.
Test Preparation: Most U.S. colleges and universities require international students to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). During each term, EPI offers the Institutional TOEFL Exam for an additional fee. Other tests such as the GMAT, GRE, and SAT are administered throughout the year at USC. A TOEFL preparation class is offered for students who feel they need additional preparation. EPI also offers test preparation in GRE. Students are charged a nominal fee for this extra instruction.
Special Programs: We work with groups to design English language programs tailored for their specific needs, goals, and time frames. We have expertise in providing training institutes for ESL and EFL teachers. Additionally, we have designed and coordinated language and culture programs for groups who want to improve their English by immersing themselves in the culture in ways not provided by our regular programs. We have also worked with academic units at the university and with professional contacts in the community to provide student contact with specific academic and professional disciplines.
International students with good high school grades can be conditionally admitted to USC undergraduate degree programs. Transfer students with good university grades can also be conditionally admitted to USC undergraduate degree programs.
When conditionally admitted students successfully complete EPI's highest level (6), they can then be admitted to the University. EPI students do not have to take the TOEFL to be admitted to USC undergraduate degree programs.
