Admissions Procedures

Factors that may be considered in determining admissibility include cumulative marks of previous academic work, ACT / SAT and TOEFL scores. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services requires that consideration be given to English proficiency, as well as financial resources available to pay for U.S. studies, before an application for a student visa (commonly known as an I-20) can be issued. Other required documents:

  • An Undergraduate or Graduate Application for Admission
  • Declaration of Finances
  • Non-refundable $US 25 application fee
  • Official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores
    • Minimum requirements for undergraduates: 500 (written) or 173 (computer)
    • Minimum requirements for graduates: 550 (written) or 213 (computer)
  • First year students (with no previous college or university work) need to have official secondary education marks sent to our Admissions Office. University transfer and graduate students need to have official transcripts of all college / university work sent to our Admissions Office.
  • Individual graduate programs may have additional application procedures.
  • Upon acceptance, you must make a deposit of $US 5000, which will be applied to first semester costs.
  • International students are subject to the immigration regulations of the U.S. federal government. You must complete all steps of the admission procedure, including those listed above, before St. Ambrose can issue a letter of acceptance and an I-20 form, as required by the United States government before it will grant a student visa.

at St. Ambrose University

An International Student Advisor is available to help with academic advising, cultural orientation, social activities and immigration concerns. You will also have access to academic program advisors. Free tutoring, available through the Student Success Center, is available for most beginning and mid-level courses. Tutorials can be used to assist with writing papers, to help with American idioms and usage, and to assist with pronunciation.

A wide variety of on-campus social, athletic, club activities and organizations are available to all students. Student recreational facilities include an indoor track, basketball and racquetball courts, weight rooms, and an indoor pool. St. Ambrose also sponsors 18 men's and women's varsity athletic teams. For those interested in the arts, the Galvin Fine Arts Center hosts a series of plays, live performances and concerts, as well.

St. Ambrose is located in the heart of what is known as the American Midwest. Davenport is the second largest city in the state of Iowa, and is found in a diverse region on the Mississippi River called the Quad Cities. The area offers a variety of cultural and entertainment activities, as well as excellent recreation and shopping facilities, and is just 294 km (183 miles) from Chicago. St. Ambrose University, Iowa

Physically, the Quad Cities region encompasses towns and counties - about twenty-four communities in all - in Iowa and Illinois. They border together on the river and comprise a vibrant population of 400,000 people. The largest cities are Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa and Rock Island, Moline and East Moline, Illinois. The Quad Cities are only a day's drive from major metropolitan areas such as Des Moines, Chicago, St. Louis, and Minneapolis.

The Mississippi River plays an important part in the Quad Cities as a modern and historical natural resource and site for recreation. Bike paths, picnic areas, sailing and other kinds of recreational boating, water-skiing, charter boats, sculptures and community-built art pieces, parks and much more can be found all along the river. The region also features a variety of local sports teams, museums, and performance venues.
